Activist stressed public awareness to end barriers to people with disability

ISLAMABAD, Sep 18 (APP):A social activist on Monday called for better long-term policies to facilitate disabled persons and asked authorities concerned to take practical steps to address social barriers through media platforms and awareness drives for special persons.
An activist for the rights of persons with disabilities Muhammad Atif Sheikh talking to PTV news channel said that it was our collective responsibility to play a positive role in providing adequate facilities for persons with disabilities and assistance in performing their day-to-day functions.
He said while having facilities for people with disabilities is crucial we also need a changing attitude in society. There is a dire need to pass a comprehensive law for the well-being of people living with disabilities, he added.
Atif said a special talent exchange programme (STEP) was being launched in Pakistan which is working for the welfare of persons with disabilities (PWDs), adding, that we are passionate about improving passengers’ experience and making stations more accessible.
“We demand that disabled people friendly entry systems should be established in all important buildings so that they are not discriminated in any way”, he added.
Replying to a question, he replied that increased access to transportation is a key factor in improving the quality of life of differently-abled persons, lowering their isolation and enhancing their participation in activities.
A safe and accessible public transport would enable them to explore more opportunities and lead a better life, he concluded.
